Taking Back Sunday – 5/31/09

My excitement to see Taking Back Sunday has come to an end. I saw them on Sunday night at the Roseland theatre with Envy on the Coast and Anberlin. Considering I’ve already seen all three bands before, I wasn’t expecting anything super different, and I was right. I think I’ve been starting to grow out of a lot of the things I used to consider ‘fun’ in my life. I used to think that going to shows and getting sweaty and smushed was my idea of a good time. Boy, oh boy. Sunday night I just got pissed off. I was drenched in other peoples sweat, I was getting kicked, punched, ran into, got the wind knocked out of me a few times and finally, when it was time to go home, I LOCKED MY KEYS IN THE CAR. But we have to rewind a bit and talk about how I thought someone stole them or that they fell out at some point…so I spent a twenty extra minutes inside the venue after the show looking for my lost and stolen car keys. So I called my momma. She came with the spare key and a bowl of popcorn on the passenger seat. Then I beat her home on the freeway. Stoked!

And it has no relevance what-so-ever to this blog, but I thought I’d share.

I get to see Taking Back Sunday, on Sunday, which is in 4 days. I’m so excited, although I’m going all by myself which could be potentially dangerous walking to my car at night alone…oh well? Nothing bad will happen. I’m just stoked to see my old favorite band. Envy on the Coast will also be with TBS, as well as Anberlin. I’ve seen all these bands before, but I really liked Envy on the Coast. Anberlin is alright, just not really my thing. Dang, it’s gonna be a fun time.

The inconvienience of a ten disc CD changer…

I have one in my car. It’s a 92 Toyota Camry, top of the line, sun roof and all that nice top of the line stuff. I even have a ten disc CD changer in my trunk. So, here is where I complain. Every time I want to put a cd in or change one out, I have to open my trunk to do it. My trunk has a spring problem and always shuts on me. I mean it’s nice if I had 10 cds I always wanted to listen to, but I really do get sick of them. So I need to go to my trunk and change them out once in a while. So, then I discovered the tape deck iPod connecter. Put the tape in the tape player, connect the cord to your iPod and there ya go! But wait…what’s that ticking sound? OH YEAH, IT’S THE STUPID TAPE THING TICKING IN THE PLAYER. I can hear it over the music, it’s quite irritating. What am I to do, especially once my iPod has been dead for three weeks? Oh, I know, listen to the radio and all the catchy trashy rap songs i.e. I know you want me by Pitbull & Blame it by Jamie Fox. What is a girl to do about the music…

Taking Back Sunday – Alternative press pt. II?

I’m subscribed to a popular music magazine called Alternative Press Magazine. I’ve been getting AP for about two years now, and I’m always stoked to see who’s on the cover and what bands have articles in the next new issue. This months band was Taking Back Sunday! I’m so stoked. They were on the cover a couple years back and I still have that issue because I love to read that article still. TBS have been one of my favorite favorite bands since 6th grade. They are about to release a new album called ‘New Again’ and I’m excited because it’s been three years since their last one (Louder Now – 2006). They’ve lost a member, and gained a new one, and I’m so excited to hear how the music sounds and the differences between the previous three albums compared to ‘New Again.’ I’m going to see Taking Back Sunday on May 31st at the Roseland Theatre. I’m so excited, the last time I saw them was back in 2007 at the Crystal Ballroom. It was actually a cool show because you had to volunteer to get the ticket, didn’t have to pay a dime and at the same time you were helping the environment. We volunteered up on Terwilliger Curves in Portland and tore ivy off the trees. That was a fun experience. Anyway, I’m rambling. I love this band and I love this magazine. I’m so stoked for the 31st!

As Cities Burn – Hell or High Water

I’ve recently purchased the new As Cities Burn album, Hell or High Water. I loved it the first time I played it through. There is a common theme throughout the album of struggle with faith and the pressures and expectations in society. One of my favorite songs is called ‘Made Too Pretty’ and there are a couple lines that I’d like to point out -

“And if there is one thing bigger than my head,
that’s the distance I’ve been mislead.”

“We don’t want a God we don’t see in ourselves don’t see we’re in need.”

Although I’m not one to believe in God or specify myself with a certain religion, I do agree to an extent with what Cody is saying in this song. We really forget about the people and things around us when we get caught up in ourselves and the ‘not so holy or humble’ parts of life. I just really enjoy this album a lot. ACB’s last album (Come Now Sleep) was more…loud I guess, in the sense that the guitars were a little heavier and there was more screaming. I was very pleased when I heard Hell or High Water. There is a good amount of everything all mixed together evenly. If you like a good heartfelt, soft/hard/alternative sound, I suggest checking out As Cities Burn.

Hawthorne Theatre 4/28/09

Last night I went to the Hawthorne Theatre to see my friend Tommy’s band play. His band is called Emsley, and I’ve seen them play live before, and they’re really good. Emsley played first, and they put on a great show. Sleep for sleepers played next, they’re from Los Angeles and I’ve never seen them or heard of them before. They were very good as well, kind of a soft rock sound, very mellow at times, so good. Next was New Heights, once again, never heard of them or seen them. They’re from Seattle, so I guess they are kind of a local band? I don’t know but they had the same sound as Sleep for sleepers did. Next up was Brightwood. Take the sound from all three bands and multiply it by ten. They were absolutely amazing, and I’ve never even listened to them before. In my opinion, Emsley and Brightwood were my two favorites of the night, and they’re both from Portland. It’s crazy, I never knew we had such a good local band scene.
